Farmers' Museum Harvest Festival

Autumn Begins as The Farmers' Museum Celebrates Its 40th Annual Harvest Festival

Celebrate the bounty of fall during the 40th annual Harvest Festival at The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., taking place Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Since 1978, this event has grown to become a regional favorite, bringing together a wide variety of performers, artisans, and vendors. It offers the perfect blend of new attractions and trusted favorites each year.

Find two days of live performances, music, and family activities. On Saturday, enjoy guitarist Will Walker from 1:30-3:00 p.m., followed by the funk and reggae sounds of Hanzolo. On Sunday, see line dancing demonstrations, as well as the music of Gravelyard from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Each day, find children's craft activities in the Festival Tent plus outdoor games. The museum's Templeton Players perform the short play, A Case For Eviction, on Saturday and the one-act farce, Box and Cox, on Sunday–both guaranteed to captivate audiences of all ages (12:00 p.m. both days).

The ongoing traditions of Harvest Festival contribute to its charm. Nineteenth-century musicians Jim Kimball and Dick Bolt have added to the festival's ambiance since the late 1970s. Also part of Harvest Festival history is Dickens the Clown, delighting children and the young at heart for almost 40 years.

Animals always take the spotlight at Harvest Festival. Take a ride through the museum's grounds in a horse-drawn wagon. Watch a parade of prize-winning animals from the museum's annual Junior Livestock Show. Hinman Hollow Sport Dogs will dazzle you with their agility and obedience demonstrations. Kids enjoy the Children's Barnyard and cuddly alpacas from various regional farms.

Hops are still the talk of the museum this fall. Take our Hoppy Trails Tour at 11:00 a.m. and learn about the history of hops as you move through our tavern, hops field, farmstead, and hop house. Afterward, enjoy a beer tasting in Bump Tavern with Butternuts Beer and Ale from noon to 2:00 p.m. (free with a paid museum admission, must be 21 or over).

If you like historical trades, you won't be disappointed. Many artisans show off their skills each year, such as George Olsen from GTO Woodturning. Sit for a tintype portrait. Get hands-on with rope making, coopering, and see spinning and fiber art demonstrations. You'll also find tinsmiths, woodworkers, quilters, bakers, and potters.

The Ag Tent features the Cooperstown Farmer's Market, Leatherstocking Beekeepers, Otsego County Maple Producers, Otsego County Dairy Promotion, and Kingfisher Lavender.

Harvest Festival gives visitors the opportunity to assist our interpreters with the harvesting of the gardens at the museum's Lippitt Farmstead. Children enjoy additional agricultural activities that include corn shelling and grinding, apple bobbing, and apple pressing. The entire family can take part in games and crafts as well.

An abundance of delicious foods from the season's harvest await festival-goers including roasted corn, pulled pork, chili, hot dogs, and Huff Ice Cream. You will also find homemade pies, fresh baked goods, and cider slushies.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of our Research Library with a full day of insightful programs from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. If you are interested in learning about an incredible cache of local history and ephemera, stop in to hear more about our collections and resources in several 15 to 20-minute informational sessions led by our knowledgeable staff members and volunteers.
